More on Jyri Engeström at Reboot 9.0

More details about Jyri Engeström's upcoming (May 31) presentation have been posted to Jyri's Reboot 9.0 page:

I plan to talk about what gets me excited right now, and that's microblogging. I want to continue where I left off with "social peripheral vision" (www.zengestrom.com/blog/2006/07/blind_mens_base.html) last year and "object-centered sociality" (www.zengestrom.com/blog/2005/04/why_some_social.html) the previous year, and talk about a new trend in social objects on the Internet. Social objects are
1) becoming smaller
2) their value diminishes more quickly over time
3) they travel across different channels

Reboot 9.0 runs May 31 - June 1 in Copehagen. Visit Jyri's Reboot 9.0 page, the Reboot 9.0 site, and the Jaiku Reboot 9.0 channel for more details.

Why use Jaiku?

On his se4n blog, Sean Duncan describes why he uses Jaiku:

Here is my Jaiku page, and here is my grand mal RSS feed (both are now linked on the front page of this weblog). It currently includes whatever I choose to put for my Jaiku status (probably not much), plus it gets updated whenever a new Flickr photo gets posted, whenever I listen to music and it gets noted by last.fm, whenever I update that I got a new book to Library Thing, whenever I add new movies to my Netflix queue, etc. Now, this is the kind of ridiculous minutiae I can get behind!

I’m only partially joking, I honestly think this makes more sense for how I interact on the Internet and what I value about it. I am not the type of person who is going to read blog after blog to see what kind of mood someone is in, but I am the kind of person who wants to know what music people are listening to, see the latest photos they’ve decided to share with the world, find good new movies to check out, and so on. Jaiku lets me do that, plus lets me tell you all whenever I’m gassy.

Scrawled in Wax loves Jaiku

Scrawled in Wax writes, Jaiku is Web 2.0's latest bright idea, and I for one am mightily impressed. More:

While many have claimed that Jaiku continues the nanoblogging trend - a trend that is as equally reviled as it is adored - Jaiku seems to be more concerned with RSS consolidation, or what has been termed 'presence management' by some. While that sounds awfully fancy - and in conception actually is quite sophisticated - what it does is quite basic: takes everything you do online and puts it one place.

Auto linking #channel and @username

Not to be outdone by .. himself .. lemonad has now put together another Greasemonkey script for solving another wishlist item. This latest creation will turn all instances of #channel into a link to that channel and @username into a link to that username's presence. Fantastic!

As per last time, you can install it and read more on his website and it's only available to Firefox users.

More context for Jaiku comments

Earlier this week, Jaiku user lemonad suggested in the #Jaiku channel that it would be good to see more of the original post in the comments in your stream. After all it's easier to understand "Comment on I went to the shop for some cheese" than to understand "Comment on I went to ..."

Not the overly patient type, lemonad has gone ahead with his own suggestion and has created a Greasemonkey script for those of us using Firefox. This script will extend the context of comments show on the Jaiku.com website, and doesn't even require extra network traffic.

Without the script

If you use FireFox, read more or install lemonad's greasemonkey script from his website

Jaikufans.com User Pages are live

Users of Jaikufans.com can now set up their own userpage to tell the world a bit more about themselves. This single page profile is a great way to tell fellow Jaikuers a bit more about yourself. Add a link to your blog, facebook profile, or anything else. Tell us your favorite movies or food. What do you do for a living? What do you love about Jaiku? Are you a web2.0 junkie?

User pages are fully searchable and so make it easier to find people with similar interests.

If you're already registered, log in and go to http://jaikufans.com/users/username and click the 'edit' link.

If you haven't registered yet, it's totally 100% free and quick. All you need is a Jaiku account and an email address.

(Anyone running a channel can also request a channel page to tell the world more about your channel than fits in the small profile area on the Jaiku.com site)

Channel Pages now active

Are you a channel admin? Register today and create a channel page for your channel. You can put (almost) anything you want on your channel page. (Here's an example).

To create your own channel page, send an email to admin@jaikufans.com with your username and the name of the channel you're the admin for and request your channel page.

User Registration Opens

There's not too much to see yet, but you can now register with Jaikufans.com. In the coming week or so, you'll be able to use that registration to create your own 'fan page' to tell the world more about yourself and to find other users and channels with similar interest.
